    Marching Into a New Year

At the end of each year, I like to look back and remember what God has done and look ahead to what I believe He will do in the coming year. This year, I thought I’d share some of my reflections. I pray you are encouraged to reflect on how you have grown and seen God work over the past year and build anticipation for this new year. For me, 2018 was a year of milestones: I was accepted to my dream Bible school, I graduated from high school, and I transitioned to college life in downtown Chicago. There were many highs and lows—endings and beginnings, fears and anticipations, “see…

    Day 6: Belong

This month, I’m participating in a Five Minute Friday challenge called “31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes,” responding to a one-word prompt for five minutes each day in October. Click here to join in! One of the things I’ve missed about home since coming to college is the sense of belonging. When I’m at home with my family, the people know me, and I can relax and be myself. When I’m at my home church, I know where everything is, I know many of the people, and I’m greeted with smiles and hugs. I fit in. It takes a while to feel like you belong in a new environment with…

    Day 5: Sharing Life Together

This post was written for the weekly Five Minute Friday blog linkup. Each week, writers respond to a one-word prompt by writing for five minutes, then share their unedited writing with each other. Click here to join the fun! This week’s prompt: Share. One of my favorite things about being at a Bible college is the way I get to live life together with other believers. We share everything: our rooms, our staplers, a bathroom, a laundry room, classrooms, friends, professors, a table at meals, and countless similar experiences. We share our joys and our struggles and support each other. Yesterday my roommate shared flashcards she had made so I could…

    Discovering Womanhood

This post was written for the weekly Five Minute Friday blog linkup. Each week, writers respond to a one-word prompt by writing for five minutes, then share their unedited writing with each other. Click here to join the fun! This week’s prompt: Woman. “Woman: an adult female person.” (Dictionary.com) This label has legally applied to me for less than a year, so I’m still discovering what it means. Entering adulthood, I have many questions about what my role is in the church and in society as a whole. What is unique and special about being a woman? What gifts did God give women that He didn’t give to men? Toward the…

When There Seems to Be No Way

This post was written for the weekly Five Minute Friday blog linkup. Each week, writers respond to a one-word prompt by writing for five minutes, then share their unedited writing with each other. Click here to join the fun! This week’s prompt: Way. The Israelites are trapped in slavery, and Pharaoh refuses to let them go. God sends 10 plagues and then splits open the sea to lead His people to freedom. Mankind is dead in sin and rebellion, destined to be separated from God forever. God sends His only Son to redeem us and restore our relationship. God makes a way when there seems to be no way. This week,…

    Between Two Seasons

This post was written for the weekly Five Minute Friday blog linkup. Each week, writers respond to a one-word prompt by writing for five minutes, then share their unedited writing with each other. Click here to join the fun! This week’s prompt: Vacation. When I think of vacation, I tend to remember all the trips my family has taken to various parts of the country and the world. We have had many adventures, difficulties, and good times making memories as we travel. This summer, vacation looks a bit different for me. I’m kind of between worlds—I’m no longer a high school student, but I haven’t started college yet. I have these…

    A New Ocean

This post was written for the weekly Five Minute Friday blog linkup. Each week, writers respond to a one-word prompt by writing for five minutes, then share their writing with each other. Click here to join the fun! This week’s prompt: Ocean. “Oceans” by Hillsong United is one of my favorite songs. Whenever I hear it, I am challenged to trust God with my life and allow Him to pull me out of my comfort zone and into the greater plan He has for me. Recently, the metaphor of an ocean has been resonating with me as I ponder my upcoming transition to college life. I don’t know what’s coming, I…

    A Vineyard or a Graveyard

Note: This is the fourth in a series of posts about my missions adventure in Uganda in the spring of 2018. Click here to read other posts in this series. One night in Uganda, a group of university students came to our hotel for dinner. The students are part of the first graduating class from the ministry’s schools and are now pursuing higher education. This dinner was a special occasion for the students—they were dressed up, had their nails painted, and all wanted to get pictures taken with each other and our American team. We had a buffet dinner and conversed with the students, learning about their majors and career…
