    Marching Into a New Year

At the end of each year, I like to look back and remember what God has done and look ahead to what I believe He will do in the coming year. This year, I thought I’d share some of my reflections. I pray you are encouraged to reflect on how you have grown and seen God work over the past year and build anticipation for this new year. For me, 2018 was a year of milestones: I was accepted to my dream Bible school, I graduated from high school, and I transitioned to college life in downtown Chicago. There were many highs and lows—endings and beginnings, fears and anticipations, “see…

    A Deeply Caring Father

This post was written for the weekly Five Minute Friday blog linkup. This week’s prompt: Deep. “Deep and wide, deep and wide, there’s a fountain flowing deep and wide…” Did this song make any sense to you as a kid? I definitely didn’t understand these words we sang in Sunday school. As it turns out, this song is talking about the love of God. I don’t usually picture it as a fountain, but more like an ocean or a tidal wave. God’s love is…

    Anxiety…Rest

Anxiety comes like a tidal wave and throws me into confusion Mental illness showing through the cracks of a broken person Can’t think, can’t breathe yet breathing too much Can’t speak, yet speaking incessantly Can’t express what’s going on inside of me Frozen, thoughts get stuck in my brain like a beetle trying to wade through mud Grasping for hands, for hugs, for help Reaching for sanity, for peace, for air Anxiety rears its ugly head like a beast that’s been waiting to pounce My heart is pounding like a bass drum, speeding down a railroad track, the world is a blur Wringing my hands, biting my nails, the tears…

    Day 25: Capture

This month, I’m participating in a Five Minute Friday challenge called “31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes,” responding to a one-word prompt for five minutes each day in October. Click here to join in! When I hear the word “capture,” I think of the song by tobyMac called “Captured.” It says, All I want to do is get into You You’ve got me captured By Your Love All I want to do is stay here with You You’ve got me raptured Can’t get enough I want that to be my prayer. I want to be so captivated by the beauty of Christ that I just keep coming back for more. I…

    Day 23: Common

This month, I’m participating in a Five Minute Friday challenge called “31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes,” responding to a one-word prompt for five minutes each day in October. Click here to join in! What I see as common and ordinary might be a gift from God. Maybe He’s trying to speak to me through it. Maybe He wants me to use it as an opportunity. For example, my cozy bed, the view out our 10th-floor window, and the trees I walk by in the plaza are gifts from the One from whom all good things come. Maybe the advice given to me by a friend is God’s message for me…

    Potential for Revival

This post was written for the weekly Five Minute Friday blog linkup. Each week, writers respond to a one-word prompt by writing for five minutes, then share their unedited writing with each other. Click here to join the fun! This week’s prompt: Potential. I think of all the people in the Church, especially young people, who are apathetic about Jesus, unaware of the power of the gospel. They have so much potential—my generation could rock the world with revival, but so many of us are desensitized to the wonder of the gift we’ve been given. If we understood the power of God, His immensity, His love for us, and the abundant…

    The Most Loyal Companion

This post was written for the weekly Five Minute Friday blog linkup. Each week, writers respond to a one-word prompt by writing for five minutes, then share their unedited writing with each other. Click here to join the fun! This week’s prompt: Loyal. One quality we often value in our relationships is loyalty. We want to know that a person is committed to our wellbeing and will stay faithful to us even when things get rocky or life circumstances change. Jesus is the best, most loyal companion, protector, counselor, and friend I could ever ask for. His Word tells me that He will never leave me or forsake me, and that…

    No “Ifs” About it

This post was written for the weekly Five Minute Friday blog linkup. Each week, writers respond to a one-word prompt by writing for five minutes, then share their writing with each other. Click here to join the fun! This week’s prompt: If. If. A lot can hang on that little word. “I’ll hang out with you…if I can pick where we go to eat.” “I’ll do this favor for you…if you’ll do one for me.” “I’ll love you…if you wear enough makeup.” “I’ll be your friend…if it makes me look good to others.” “I’ll get this job…if I can make a good enough impression.” “I’ll follow where God leads me…if He…
