This month, I’m participating in a Five Minute Friday challenge called “31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes,” responding to a one-word prompt for five minutes each day in October. Click here to join in!
One of the things I’ve missed about home since coming to college is the sense of belonging. When I’m at home with my family, the people know me, and I can relax and be myself. When I’m at my home church, I know where everything is, I know many of the people, and I’m greeted with smiles and hugs. I fit in.
It takes a while to feel like you belong in a new environment with new people. I still don’t know how to navigate Chicago, I’ve gone to the wrong building for a class, and I don’t know very many people. However, by God’s grace, I am slowly starting to feel like a part of this wonderful community.
Now when I walk across campus, I’ll run into someone I’ve talked to before. When I get out of a class, I know where to head next. I can even find my way through the underground tunnel system most of the time. My room and my floor mates are starting to feel like a home with a family.
Praise God for the ways He allows us to belong, to find people and places where we feel known, accepted, and loved. Where do you belong?
